Student-Athletes Take Aim at the 2025 M&O County Championship Trapshoot

Middle Inlet, WI — The north shore of Lake Noquebay echoed with the steady rhythm of shotguns this past Sunday as 102 student-athletes from seven area high schools gathered at the Lake Noquebay Sportsman’s Club for the 2025 M&O County Championship Trapshoot.

Hosted on June 1, the event brought together teams from Coleman, Crivitz, Gillett/Suring, Lena, Marinette, Oconto, and Wausaukee, each fielding student-athletes in Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Novice classes. Across the day, competitors faced down more than 10,200 clay targets in a test of precision, nerves, and teamwork—all in pursuit of the title of M&O County Champion.

“This championship is more than just a local meet,” said Randall Copiskey, event director and President of the Lake Noquebay Sportsman’s Club. “It’s a chance for these young athletes to stand tall under pressure, to represent their schools with pride, and to showcase a sport that demands discipline, focus, and a whole lot of heart.”

The Varsity class came down to a nail-biting finish. The Oconto Blue Devils narrowly edged out the Crivitz Wolverines by a single target—458 to 457 out of a possible 500. Representing Oconto’s winning squad were Gavin Sunderlage, Michael Kaye, Nolan Viestenz, Shelton Shultz, and Melanie Dunks.

In the Junior Varsity class, Oconto once again claimed the top team score, posting a commanding 399/500. Shooters Aiden Prey, Kyle Prey, Daniel Porath, Mason Cournoyer, and Eli Lemere led the way.

The Novice class title went to the Gillett/Suring team with a score of 286/500. Team members Ryker Gruel, Grant Gruetzmacher, Harper Blaskowski, Brandon Williams, and Scarlett Olson each contributed to the win.

Individual honors were also awarded. Oconto’s Gavin Sunderlage led the entire field with an impressive 97/100. Crivitz shooters swept the Top Gun gender categories with Jack Copiskey earning Top Gun Boy (96/100) and Leah Jahnke claiming Top Gun Girl (91/100).

Other standout performances included:

  • Varsity Top Gun: Victor Kostreva (Coleman) – 94/100

  • Novice 3rd Place: Owen Walters (Crivitz) – 69/100

Each of the teams that competed in the M&O County Championship is a member of the Wisconsin State High School Clay Target League—part of the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. The league emphasizes safety, teamwork, and sportsmanship, and is open to student-athletes of all skill levels.

The event also featured a special guest of honor—Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller—who generously donated his time to attend the event and present awards to the winning squads and top individual shooters. His presence underscored the strong relationship between youth sports and community leadership in the region.

For these athletes, the county shoot is more than just a local event—it’s also a lead-up to the State Tournament, held June 7–8 at the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association’s Homegrounds in Nekoosa. There, the top shooters from across Wisconsin will compete on one of the premier trapshooting stages in the Midwest.

Whether it’s the crack of a well-timed shot or the high-fives from teammates after a perfect round, trapshooting continues to carve out a meaningful place in the high school sports landscape of Northeast Wisconsin. With growing support from families, communities, and local clubs like Lake Noquebay Sportsman’s Club, the sport shows no signs of slowing down.
